CAMP INFO

OVERVIEW:

Camps will Start 11:00am, with a 5 minute grace period in the beginning of class for students to arrive before instruction starts. We will be learning how to create an elaborate animation in a very approachable manner. The Basics of animating on paper will be taught, with each day having it’s own individual focus. During the first half of the class, we will be learning and doing exercises together, and getting the students the help that they need as to make sure they don’t fall behind with constant check ins. After a 15 minute break, the second half of class resumes mostly as a work session with time for individual help on each students individual help that their project may require. Scans of the students drawings will be collected and will be put together in a final video to be sent back out on August 9th.

MATERIALS:

12 sheets of 8.5x11” printer/computer paper (standard size), pencil, eraser. Something to ink and color with are optional, but recommended.

The material requirements are kept as universal as possible to be able to get the maximum amount of engagement as possible.

breakdown:

  • Day 1- Intro, Storyboards, Frame 1

    • Introduction to the class. Students get to know each other, and we go over the basics of animation. Examples of past students work will be shown so students know what to expect. The first exercise will be drawing our main character standing on our page, which will serve as our frame #1. By the end of the day, we will have discuss and have figured out the loose overall idea of their animation with some extra wiggle room to make changes in the story as needed.

  • Day 2- Frames 2-4, Start Background

    • The start of our second day will be spent animating the next three frames of our main character to move our story along. Students will become pretty comfortable at this point with the rhythm of animating. We will also be taking a look at how to put together a background for and create an environment for their movie. They will have time to continue to work through their backgrounds as the week goes on.

  • Day 3- Frames 4-7, Introduction of Second Character

    • Halfway through, we will be introducing a second character into our animation and having them interact with our first character somehow. Different methods will be looked at on how to bring in our second character, and what the interaction with the first character will look like.

  • Day 4 - Frames 7-10, Finishing Background

    • At this point, students will be able to animate two characters at once, and the day will be dedicated to students finishing off their animations. Depending on how comfortable the student is with the process and how fast their drawing, there’s a chance that additional frames will be added in addition to the minimum required 10 frames. There will also be time for backgrounds to be inked and possibly colored.

  • Day 5 - Final Production Day.

    • The final day of camp will be a dedicated work day. No lessons will be taught, but this is a great time for students to do any catching up that they need to do. Inking and coloring the background and frames isn’t mandatory, but if students have time to take care of that, then it’s an absolute plus. Other additions that students can be included are, possible title card, our additional frames in-between their current frames to make transitions smoother, just to name a few! There will be plenty to keep them busy.
